Private, guided tour of the Musée d’art et histoire in Geneva

12 February - 16 h 30 à 18 h 00

We invite you to a guided tour of the highlights of the MAH’s Fine Arts collection, followed by an informal outing in the old town.

The tour will focus on two major themes in European art history: portraiture and landscape painting, showing how they were treated in different periods, with a particular emphasis on the specific characteristics of the Swiss and Geneva schools.
We will see some very well-known works and artists, including:
– La Pêche miraculeuse byu Konrad Witz, a seminal work in European landscape painting.
– Portraits from the Italian and Northern Renaissance, to compare approaches and styles.
– 18th-century portraiture in France and Geneva, with the Portrait of Elisabeth Charlotte of Bavaria, Duchess of Orleans, attributed to the studio of Hyacinthe Rigaud, and the portrait of Madame de Stael by Élisabeth Vigier-Lebrun.
– The birth of the Geneva school of landscape painting, with Le Mont Blanc vu de Sallanches au coucher du soleil (Mont Blanc seen from Sallanches at sunset) by Pierre-Louis de la Rive and Orage à la Handek (Storm at Handek) by Alexandre Calame. We will also discuss Johann Heinrich Füssli and Jacques-Laurent Agasse.
– Finally, after reviewing Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting (with major artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Camille Corot), we will see how Ferdinand Hodler and Félix Vallotton developed a new visual language that would have a lasting influence on Geneva painters.
